All gas, no brakes: Brex + Capital One

Happy Tuesday Brex Community,

As you likely saw on Thursday, Capital One has agreed to acquire Brex for $5.15B!

Additional insights are available by listening to the Capital One earnings call from Thursday with the CEO/Founder, Richard Fairbank. During the portion of the earnings call where Brex is discussed (18 minute mark), three words were used the most frequently: payments, growth, technology. Richard knows that payments is the future of banking & recognized that Brex has invested on this front & has done well. Regarding growth, he mentioned several times that the deal was agreed to in order to grow the Brex business. Lastly, on the technology front, Richard mentioned the core fintech infrastructure that Brex has built over the years and that is was a clear differentiator.

Expanding into this a bit more from a tactical perspective. Capital One has a large marketing infrastructure and budget, leveraging those, Brex will be able add more customers. Secondly , there are many existing Capital One customers who don’t use Brex, so there is a substantial opportunity to onboard those companies onto Brex for their spend management needs. Lastly, there is going to be an opportunity to expand margins for the Brex business by leveraging the Capital One infrastructure. These three things (but not limited to), will provide a lot of tailwinds for the already robust Brex business.

This partnership is an example of where 1 + 1 = 3. I’m excited on the opportunity for future growth and looking forward to put the foot on the gas!

Have a great week,

Shai Goldman

Connect Ventures is a newly launched venture capital fund focused on investing in exceptional consumer-focused startups, particularly those leveraging AI to drive innovation. Founded by Nicole Quinn, a seasoned investor with a track record at Lightspeed Venture Partners where she backed successes like Calm, Goop, and Cameo, the fund partners with Mike Blank from NEA and Creative Artists Agency (CAA). This collaboration aims to take advantage of the renewed interest in consumer technology by highlighting AI's important role, similar to the internet or mobile tech, in driving growth in consumer apps. The fund believes AI can do more than just improve productivity; it can lower creation costs and increase efficiency, giving people more free time and money to spend on things they enjoy, like music, sports, travel, shopping, and health. Connect Ventures expects a new wave of successful consumer companies, driven by AI, to emerge every 7-10 years. They believe the most successful companies will be those that are easy to use, emotionally engaging, and culturally relevant, focusing on word-of-mouth and influencer marketing rather than traditional methods like SEO. Connect Ventures stands out by offering more than just money. With CAA's 50+ years of experience in building stars and stories, the fund provides founders with access to a large network of agents, talent, media, and partnerships to help their companies grow quickly. They are especially interested in areas where culture and technology meet, like sports, media, e-commerce, digital health, and prosumer platforms. The firm is looking for AI-driven consumer companies to partner with as they help restart the consumer tech industry.
